#341 Dave Adlesh - St. Louis Cardinals

David George Adlesh
St. Louis Cardinals
Catcher

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'0"  Weight:  187
Born:  July 15, 1943, Long Beach, CA
Signed:  Signed by the Houston Colt .45s as an amateur free agent before 1963 season
Major League Teams:  Houston Colt .45s 1963-64; Houston Astros 1965-68
Died:  February 15, 2016, Long Beach, CA (age 72)

The Houston Colt .45s thought so highly of Dave Adlesh they had him make his big league debut at the age of 19, shortly after the club had signed him out of his Long Beach, California high school.  Adlesh played for parts of six seasons in Houston, shuttled between the minor and major leagues between 1963 and 1966, but coming up to stay for the entire 1967 and 1968 seasons.  As the back-up to John Bateman (#138) in 1968, Adlesh appeared in a career-high 40 games, batting .183.  The Astros dealt him to the Cardinals following the 1968 season, with the Cardinals flipping him to the Braves in March 1969.  Adlesh would play in two more minor league seasons for the Braves and Angels organizations before retiring.

In 106 major league games, Adlesh batted .168 with three doubles, a home run and 11 RBIs.

Building the Set / Card #323
December 3, 2023 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards)
Doug and I returned to The Philly Show in early December, once again held inside the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania.  eBay has taken over sponsorship of the show, with the quaint, bubble-lettered Philly Show logo that had been in place since the 1980s replaced with a more modern logo, keeping with the times.  I wrote about the show in a post over at The Phillies Room.

Similar to my strategy from March, I wanted to focus on accumulating commons and having found success with Uncle Dick's Cards before, I didn't mess around and headed right for the neon green binders.  I pulled 145 cards from the binder containing cards 301 to the end of the set, stopping when I reached 500.  This card was the 31st of 145 cards purchased for our set, and after the dealer discount due to my bulk purchase, it cost me less than $1.

The Card / Cardinals Team Set / Accuracy Index -16
This is one of the most unbaseball-cardish cards in the 1969 Topps set.  Adlesh deserved better as there's no indication from the front of this card that he's an actual big league ballplayer, and not just a fan hanging out in the stands.  The back of the card contains Adlesh's career highlight, as he caught Don Wilson's (#202) first career no-hitter on June 18, 1967.

Accuracy Index:  This is the ninth -16 I've added so far to our set.  Adlesh is wearing an Astros uniform (-5) and he's hatless (-3).  He didn't play for the Cardinals in 1969 (-2) or ever (-6).

1969 Season
On October 11, 1968, the day after the Cardinals lost the World Series to the Tigers in seven games, the Cardinals acquired Dave Giusti (#98) and Adlesh in exchange for Johnny Edwards (#186) and minor leaguer Tommy Smith.  A little over five months later, on March 25th, Adlesh was dealt to the Braves for infielder Bob Johnson (#261).  He'd last a month in the Braves organization before being traded again, on April 30th, to the Angels for first baseman Bob Chance (#523).  In 48 minor league games, mostly with the Hawaii Islanders, Adlesh batted .239 with a pair of home runs and 15 RBIs.
