A bonus baby originally signed by the Cardinals, Lindy McDaniel would go on to pitch for 21 big league seasons and appear in nearly a thousand games.  He enjoyed a career year in 1960 when he went 12-4 with a 2.09 ERA for the Cardinals, appearing in 65 games and notching a league leading 27 saves.  McDaniel was named to both All-Star games that season and finished third in the National League Cy Young voting behind Vern Law and Warren Spahn.  McDaniel was fifth in the overall league MVP voting in 1960.  Dealt to the Cubs following the 1962 season, McDaniel continued his run of successful seasons as a reliever with a league leading 22 saves in 1963.  He appeared in at least 50 games in ten different seasons, including every season between 1959 and 1966.

McDaniel was traded to the Yankees mid-way through the 1968 season, and he'd prove to be one of the team's best relievers between 1968 and 1973.  He was nearly unhittable in 1970, going 9-5 with a 2.01 ERA in 62 appearances and 111 2/3 innings pitched.  He saved a career high 29 games that season.  McDaniel finished his pitching career with two seasons for the Royals.  In total, he appeared in 987 games, and was 141-119 with 174 saves and a 3.45 ERA.  His career appearances are currently 17th on the all-time list, and his total of 577 games finished is 23rd all-time.

Building the Set /
Card #604
September 21, 2025 from The Philly Show (Vintage Sports)
On Sunday morning, September 21st, I made the hour-long drive to the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania for the latest installment of the Philadelphia Sports Card & Memorabilia Show, known to its friends as The Philly Show.  The show has a legitimate official sponsor (eBay) and the advertisement for the event notes the show is in its 50th year.  I hadn't attended a baseball card show since the last Philly Show in December, and I was flying solo to this one as our oldest son is in his first month of college at Villanova.  I posted a full summary of the show over at The Phillies Room.

I made stops at six tables at the show, all yielding needed cards for our 1969 Topps set, and I left the show with just 16 more cards to go for my version of a complete set.  My second stop was the aptly named Vintage Sports table.  I always appreciate a dealer with clear signage explaining their pricing method, and Vintage Sports had a marker in their selection of 1969 Topps cards laying out that cards without a sleeve were $1 and cards with a sleeve were $2.  I had one "high number" in a sleeve, and that was a whopping $4.

I found 28 commons needed before moving on to my third stop.  This was the 9th of 28 total cards bought from Vintage Sports, and the 45th of 91 cards for the set added overall on the day.  Unsleeved, this card cost less than $1 after a dealer discount - another absolute bargain.

The Card / Yankees Team Set / Accuracy Index -8
Given McDaniel appears hatless and wearing a Giants jersey, it's evident a photo of him wearing a Yankees uniform was not yet available for Topps to use for this set.  On the back of the card, Topps mentions his 10 saves in 1968 twice, in both the write-up and the cartoon.

Accuracy Index:  McDaniel scores a -8 for being hatless and wearing his former team's jersey.

1969 Season
McDaniel, like many pitchers around the league in 1969, had an off-year in 1969, having a record of 5-6 with a 3.55 ERA in 51 appearances and 83 2/3 innings pitched.  His five saves were second on the club behind Jack Aker (#612).
