Dan Osinski pitched for parts of eight seasons in the majors as a durable middle reliever and occasional closer.  Nicknamed "The Silencer," Osinski was one of the original firemen as closers in baseball were becoming popular in the early 1960s.  His best seasons came with the Angels in 1963 (3.28 ERA in career high 159 1/3 innings pitched), the Braves in 1965 (61 appearances, 2.82 ERA and six saves) and the Red Sox in 1967 (3-1, 2.54 ERA over 34 relief appearances).

He pitched in a pair of games for the Red Sox in the 1967 World Series, giving up a run on two hits in 1 1/3 innings.  After spending the entire 1968 season pitching for the White Sox' top farm team in Hawaii, Osinski bolstered the White Sox bullpen in 1969, with his 51 appearances second on the club to only Wilbur Wood (#123) with 76.  Osinski appeared in a few games with the Astros in 1970 before calling it a career.  In total, he went 29-28 over 324 games with a 3.34 ERA and 18 saves.

Building the Set /
Card #515
December 15, 2024 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards)
On Sunday, December 15th, Doug and I attended the latest Philly Show, spaciously spread out inside Hall A of the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania.  I wrote a full show report over at The Phillies Room, including some thoughts on attending the show with our oldest son, who first graced the Philly Show floors back in 2012.

Having had success the prior two shows at Uncle Dick's Cards with his well-organized, neon common binders, I opted to pull up a chair once again at the friendly dealer's array of tables.  The aim was simple:  Clear out Uncle Dick's 1969 Topps commons, starting off where I had left off the year before with card #501 and going through the end of the set, card #664.  In less than 25 minutes, I completed my quest, and this is the 71st of 98 commons pulled from the binder.  After a generous dealer discount due to my bulk purchase, this card cost me a little less than $1.50.

The Card / White Sox Team Set / Accuracy Index -8
Topps was likely caught off guard when Osinski made the White Sox opening day roster after spending the entire prior season in the minors, so they used a 1967 photo of him in a Red Sox jersey standing in front of Fenway Park's Green Monster.  A photo from the same session is used on Osinski's 1968 Topps card.  Topps ignores the reliever's 1960s output on the back of the card, harking all the way back to the 1950s for the cartoon and the write-up.

Accuracy Index:  It's another -8 given the Red Sox jersey (-5) and lack of a hat (-3).

1969 Season
Osinski had a successful comeback season in 1969, going 5-5 with a 3.56 ERA in 51 relief appearances and 60 2/3 innings pitched.  Despite his success out of the White Sox bullpen, he was demoted to Triple-A following the season and had his contract was sold to the Astros on December 2nd.
