#604 Bobby Etheridge - San Francisco Giants

Bobby Lamar Etheridge
San Francisco Giants
Third Base

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  5'9"  Weight:  170
Born:  November 25, 1942, Greenville, MS
Signed:  Signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent before 1964 season
Major League Teams:  San Francisco Giants 1967, 1969
Died:  September 19, 2015, Rolling Fork, MS (age 72)

On the strength of his 40 games in the majors with the Giants in 1967, and perhaps because there were no other viable third base candidates, Topps named Bobby Etheridge to their 1967 All-Star Rookie team.  He had batted .226 with a home run and 15 RBIs in 40 games, following a July call-up by the Giants, briefly taking over the starting third base job from Jim Davenport (#102) and Jim Ray Hart (#555), before the more veteran duo relinquished the role from the rookie.  Etheridge spent all of 1968 in the minor leagues, but made the Giants' opening day roster in 1969 and was the opening day third baseman.  He'd make 34 starts overall, again ceding playing time first to Davenport and then to Tito Fuentes.

Etheridge was dealt to the Padres following the 1969 season.  He'd play through the 1973 season, spending time in the Padres, Cardinals and Mets minor league systems before retiring.  In 96 games over two big league seasons, he batted .244 with 16 doubles, a pair of triples to go along with a pair of home runs and 25 RBIs.

Building the Set /
Card #506
December 15, 2024 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards)
On Sunday, December 15th, Doug and I attended the latest Philly Show, spaciously spread out inside Hall A of the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania.  I wrote a full show report over at The Phillies Room, including some thoughts on attending the show with our oldest son, who first graced the Philly Show floors back in 2012.

Having had success the prior two shows at Uncle Dick's Cards with his well-organized, neon common binders, I opted to pull up a chair once again at the friendly dealer's array of tables.  The aim was simple:  Clear out Uncle Dick's 1969 Topps commons, starting off where I had left off the year before with card #501 and going through the end of the set, card #664.  In less than 25 minutes, I completed my quest, and this is the 62nd of 98 commons pulled from the binder.  After a generous dealer discount due to my bulk purchase, this card cost me less than $1.50.

The Card / Giants Team Set / Accuracy Index +5
This is the middle of three appearances in Topps flagship sets for Etheridge.  The back of the card touts his success in the California League and mentions he's being "groomed as the Giants' future third sacker."

Accuracy Index:  Etheridge's card earns a solid +5.

1969 Season
As mentioned above, Etheridge was the Giants' opening day third baseman.  In 56 games, he batted .260 with a home run and 10 RBIs.  He was with the club all season and his final major league game came on October 2nd, when he went 0 for 4.  On December 5th, Etheridge, Bob Barton (#41) and Ron Herbel (#251) were traded to the Padres for Frank Reberger (#637).
