Joe Lahoud, pronounced la-WHO and not rhyming with LOUD as I had always presumed, played 11 seasons in the majors, mostly with the Red Sox and Angels.  Primarily a back-up corner outfielder or designated hitter, Lahoud spent four seasons in Boston and hit a career-high 14 home runs in 1971.  He was part of a blockbuster 10-player deal in October 1971 that sent him to the Brewers, and a little over two years later he was part of another huge 9-player transaction with the Angels.  His best season came in 1974 with the Angels when Lahoud played in 127 games and batted .271 with 13 home runs and 44 RBIs.  He'd play in parts of three more seasons with the Angels and Royals before retiring in 1978.  For his career, Lahoud batted .223 in 791 games, with 429 hits, 65 home runs and 218 RBIs.

John Thibdeau pitched in eight minor league seasons in the Red Sox organization, spending all of 1967, 1968, 1969 and 1970 in Triple-A.  He won at least 10 games in five different seasons, winning a career best 13 games in 1966.  In 242 minor league games, Thibdeau was 73-57 with a 3.40 ERA and 703 strikeouts in 1,091 innings pitched.

Building the Set /
Card #202
March 12, 2023 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards)
In mid-March, Doug and I attended the Philadelphia Sports Collectors Show, held within the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania.  My main focus for this show was accumulating as many 1969 Topps commons as possible, which I did by adding a grand total of 193 cards to our set.  That's almost 30% of the entire set added in one enjoyable afternoon.  I wrote a full summary of the show in a post over at The Phillies Room, found here.

This is the 125th of the 193 commons and semi-stars purchased, pulled and stacked from the first two neon green binders housing 1969 Topps cards at the multi-table spread of Uncle Dick's Cards from Babylon, New York.  My method was simple - I pulled up a chair, found a card I needed, picked the best of the group from the binder page and set it aside.  After each 100 cards, I'd ask the dealer to tell me how much damage I had done so far.  With a budget in mind, I kept going twice, continuing after card #100 and card #200, and stopping at card #298.  The final amount due was 17% off the sticker price for the pile of 193 cards, with this card costing me less than a dollar.

The Card / Red Sox Team Set / Lahoud Accuracy Index -3 / Thibdeau Accuracy Index -11
This is the rookie card for both Lahoud and Thibdeau, and it's also Thibdeau's final card.  There's no telling what uniforms either player are actually wearing on this card.  The back of the card briefly summarizes each player's minor league accolades.

Accuracy Index:  -3 is the standard score for a player appearing on a Rookie Stars card in an unknown uniform and either hatless or wearing a hat with the logo blacked out.  Thibdeau is the first -11 so far, earned by not playing for the Red Sox in 1969 (-2) or ever (-6) and for being hatless (-3)

1969 Season - Lahoud
Lahoud spent the season as Boston's fourth outfielder, occasionally spelling the regular trio of Carl Yastrzemski (#130), Reggie Smith (#660) and Tony Conigliaro (#330).  He played in 101 games overall, and made 47 starts - 24 in right field, 15 in left field and 8 in center field.  On June 11th, he enjoyed a career day, going 3 for 5 with three home runs.  For the season, Lahoud batted .188 with nine home runs and 21 RBIs.
1969 Season - Thibdeau
Thibdeau spent all season with the Louisville Colonels, and was 10-13 with a 4.18 ERA in 29 starts.  He threw eight complete games and a shutout, striking out 81 in 185 innings pitched.  That innings pitched mark eclipsed his career best of 184 innings pitched, set in 1966.
