A member of the 1964 World Champion Cardinals, Bob Humphreys pitched in parts of nine big league seasons as a middle reliever and spent the bulk of his career with the Senators between 1966 and 1970.  Humphreys was sold by the Tigers to the Cardinals on March 15, 1963 and he'd appear in 28 games for the eventual World Champions in 1964.  He pitched a scoreless inning in Game 6 of the World Series,  striking out opposing pitcher Jim Bouton.  His best seasons came while a member of the Senators.  In 1966, Humphreys went 7-3 with a 2.82 ERA and three saves over 58 apperances.  In 1970, his final season in the majors, he was a member of the original Milwaukee Brewers, appearing in 23 games.  For his big league career, Humphreys appeared in 319 games and had a record of 27-21 with a 3.36 ERA and 20 saves.

He stayed in baseball after retiring as a player, serving as the head baseball coach at Virginia Tech University between 1974 and 1978.  He joined the Blue Jays' organization in 1979 and managed their Triple-A team in Syracuse in 1981.  Between 1984 and 2004, Humphreys worked as a minor league pitching coach within the Orioles, Brewers and Cardinals organizations.

Building the Set /
Card #130
March 12, 2023 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards)
In mid-March, Doug and I attended the Philadelphia Sports Collectors Show, held within the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania.  My main focus for this show was accumulating as many 1969 Topps commons as possible, which I did by adding a grand total of 193 cards to our set.  That's almost 30% of the entire set added in one enjoyable afternoon.  I wrote a full summary of the show in a post over at The Phillies Room, found here.

This is the 53rd of the 193 commons and semi-stars purchased, pulled and stacked from the first two neon green binders housing 1969 Topps cards at the multi-table spread of Uncle Dick's Cards from Babylon, New York.  My method was simple - I pulled up a chair, found a card I needed, picked the best of the group from the binder page and set it aside.  After each 100 cards, I'd ask the dealer to tell me how much damage I had done so far.  With a budget in mind, I kept going twice, continuing after card #100 and card #200, and stopping at card #298.  The final amount due was 17% off the sticker price for the pile of 193 cards, with this card costing less than a dollar.

The Card / Senators Team Set / Accuracy Index +5
The photo used here looks to be from the same session as the photo used for Humphreys' 1967 Topps card.  It's a little strange Topps would refer to him as a "vet" relief ace since Humphreys had pitched in only five full seasons at the time this card was released.  His 56 relief appearances in 1968 were second on the Senators behind Dennis Higgins (#441), who made 59 relief appearances.

Accuracy Index:  Humphreys' card scores a solid five.

1969 Season
In his final full season with the Senators, Humphreys appeared in 47 games, all in relief, and was 3-3 with a 3.05 ERA over 79 2/3 innings pitched.  Senators' manager Ted Williams (#650) had a quintet of well-used relievers, including Humphreys, closer Higgins, Casey Cox (#383), Dave Baldwin (#132) and lefty Darold Knowles.  The bullpen was one of the strengths of the Senators, who surprisingly finished in fourth place in the American League East with a 86-76 record.
