#29 Dave Morehead - Kansas City Royals

David Michael Morehead
Kansas City Royals
Pitcher

Bats:  Right  Throws:  Right  Height:  6'1"  Weight:  185
Born:  September 5, 1943, San Diego, CA
Signed:  Signed by the Boston Red Sox as an amateur free agent, June 16, 1961
Major League Teams:  Boston Red Sox 1963-1968; Kansas City Royals 1969-1970
World Series Appearances:  Boston Red Sox 1967

Dave Morehead pitched for eight seasons in the majors with the Red Sox and Royals.  In his major league debut on April 13, 1963, Morehead pitched a complete game shutout against the Senators, striking out ten and limiting the offense to five hits.  With the Red Sox consistently in the second division in the early 1960s, Morehead lost more games than he won, leading the league in 1965 with 18 losses.  On September 16, 1965, and with Bob Tillman (#374) catching him, Morehead pitched a no-hitter against the Indians in front of only 1,247 fans on a Thursday afternoon game at Fenway Park.  His lone blemish was a second inning walk to Rocky Colavito.

Arm injuries limited his output over the next three seasons, and while he pitched in only ten games during the regular 1967 season, Morehead made a pair of scoreless relief appearances in the World Series against the Cardinals.  Left unprotected following the 1968 season, he was selected by the Royals in the expansion draft and he was a member of the club's inaugural bullpen.  Morehead pitched two seasons in Kansas City before his arm troubles prematurely ended his career.  In 177 career games, including 134 starts, Morehead was 40-64 with a 4.15 ERA in 819 1/3 innings pitched.

Building the Set /
Card #89
March 12, 2023 from The Philly Show (Uncle Dick's Cards)
In mid-March, Doug and I attended the Philadelphia Sports Collectors Show, held within the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, Pennsylvania.  My main focus for this show was accumulating as many 1969 Topps commons as possible, which I did by adding a grand total of 193 cards to our set.  That's almost 30% of the entire set added in one enjoyable afternoon.  I wrote a full summary of the show in a post over at The Phillies Room, found here.

This is the 12th of the 193 commons and semi-stars purchased, pulled and stacked from the first two neon green binders housing 1969 Topps cards at the multi-table spread of Uncle Dick's Cards from Babylon, New York.  My method was simple - I pulled up a chair, found a card I needed, picked the best of the group from the binder page and set it aside.  After each 100 cards, I'd ask the dealer to tell me how much damage I had done so far.  With a budget in mind, I kept going twice, continuing after card #100 and card #200, and stopping at card #298.  The final amount due was 17% off the sticker price for the pile of 193 cards, with this card costing me less than a dollar.  If I stick to composing posts five times a week, and I'm already slipping off that pace a little, I should go through the stack and be caught up by the week of January 22, 2024!

The Card / Royals Team Set / Accuracy Index -8
Morehead is wearing a Red Sox uniform here, and the Topps photographer had him remove his hat for this photo taken in the same session as the photo used for his 1968 Topps card.  The cartoon on the back highlights his sharing the same high school as Ted Williams (#650), Herbert Hoover High School in San Diego.  The brief write-up covers his successful 1968 season out of the Red Sox bullpen, his being drafted by the Royals and his 1965 no-hitter.

Accuracy Index:  It's another -8, given Morehead is hatless (-3) and wearing a Red Sox jersey (-5).

1969 Season
Morehead was the 15th pick in the 1968 expansion draft on October 15, 1968.  I'm assuming he was injured for part of the season, as he made only 21 appearances, pitching a total of 33 innings.  He went more than a month between appearances from mid-June to late July.  Overall he was 2-3 with a 5.73 ERA, with two of his 21 appearances starts.
